Autism & Spiritual Direction
an Interview with Josh Davis
Join us for a virtual evening of conversation around the topic of Autism in spiritual direction. We look forward to hearing first-hand from a director who faces the joys and challenges of living with Autism and discovering how it impacts his experience of receiving spiritual direction.
As a late-diagnosed autistic, ADHD’er who grew up in both the USA and the Dominican Republic, Josh will share what has helped and hindered his encounter with God in communal spaces and specifically in the spiritual direction space.
How has his Autism impacted his relationship with God? What hinders? What has helped him in this relationship?
How has the ministry of spiritual direction helped or hindered in his faith journey with Autism?
How has Autism impacted his experience of receiving spiritual direction?
What would he like other spiritual directors to know about companioning Autistic people? Are their questions to be asked/avoided? Language to be used/avoided? Boundaries to be accommodated? Practices that are helpful?
We hope this initial conversation will be a primer for further conversation and education around how spiritual directors can become wise and compassionate companions to those living in neurodivergent spaces.
Josh loves diverse people and loves to make safe space for complexity. He is the founder of Proskuneo (www.proskuneo.org), a Jesus-centered, multicultural worshiping community and the co-author of the book “Worship Together [in your church as in heaven].” He also helps people engage with themselves, others, and God at www.patreon.com/justjoshdavis.
In his spare time, Josh loves to walk long distances, learn languages, and drink coffee. Josh lives with his wife and children in Clarkston, GA.
