About Me

My name is Anya Louisa Hernandez and I’m a teaching artist and spiritual director. Before I discovered spiritual direction, I was a dance-theater performer and director. With a bachelor’s degree in theater, much of my worldview has been colored by a cultivated practice of presence with others, self, and questions at hand, knowing that they point to a larger story unfolding. Over the years, my artistic life has become inseparable from my Christian walk as I discovered the healing partnership of prayerful creativity and compassionate, embodied listening. I now practice as a certified spiritual director and trauma support specialist in Dallas, TX. When I’m not practicing, I facilitate SEL arts enrichment for youth, and serve in community life ministry, often enjoying shared meals and good coffee with church family. Through spiritual direction, I look forward to walking with you as we learn to listen, engage, and create with greater awareness of God’s story unfolding in every area of life!

Have you ever felt disconnected or alone? I've been there too. I thought I had the perfect life, until one day it all started to fall apart. On that day, my aunt died, my dad was admitted to the hospital, and my husband of over 20 years decided he wanted to separate. Since then, my dad has also died and my marriage ended in divorce. I have gone through the dark night of the soul (also called the valley of the shadow of death) and found God faithful through it all.

I would be honored to walk with you wherever you currently are in your journey with God. I will hold space with you and the Holy Spirit to help you to connect with Jesus. My goal is to create a safe place where I can help you to hear from Jesus, not to tell you what I think Jesus wants you to know. I cannot promise that you will hear from Jesus during a session for He's in control, not me. But I can lead you through practices that help people to connect with God.

I have a certificate in Spiritual Formation and the Art of Spiritual Direction from Healing Care Ministries. I also have a certificate in Formational Prayer from Ashland Theological Seminary and a BA with majors in psychology and economics from The Ohio State University.

My journey in spiritual direction started from a personal journey years ago as a successful pastor on the edge of burnout, who stepped away for a season in order to find my true self and put my personal relationship with Christ back in the center of my life, rather than ministry. Now I am blessed to serve only out of my passions & gifts.

Skilled at listening to people’s stories and helping directees and retreatants uncover the movement of God in them. Lots of experience working with people at all stages of their spiritual journey, from spiritual seekers to committed followers of Christ and all stages in between. Work with pastors in crisis & life transitions, and lead retreats for pastors and church leaders to rekindle a deep relationship with Jesus and creating more healthy, sustainable spiritual rhythms. Work with church boards & staffs to set up structures and speak on pastoral wellness. Also serve as a retreat speaker and provide marital/premarital Counseling (Prepare-Enrich Certified Coach for over 15 years).

Pastor for more than 25 years, ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church, currently on the pastoral staff of a large church in the Church of the Nazarene denomination.

Received my training from Fuller Seminary & from the Weborg Center for Spiritual Direction at North Park Theological Seminary. I am a member of the Covenant Association of Spiritual Directors, yet I also have extensive backgrounds in both Benedictine & Ignatian spirituality.

Outside of ministry, passionate loves are my wife, son & hiking/backpacking. My wife also provides support with couples spiritual direction.

I was originally born in Hong Kong, then later on studied oversea in Ontario, Canada for higher education.

In these forty plus years of this interesting journey of my Christian life, there were moments God purposefully and sovereignly allowed unexpected challenges in my life through which God used to lead me into full-time International Ministry, loving others and being hand and feet for Jesus. In heined-sight, God used this full-time ministry to lead me into life rewarding theological training, MA Spiritual Formation and Soul Care in Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. God also used this training to stretch and transform me further, and deepen my Christian journey.

As part of the community of Christ, it is my deepest passion to journey with others as a Spiritual Director, particularly in the Asian Community. I believe that Jesus can heal and bring hope to those who seeks after Him.

Since cross-cultural experiences brings me life and energies, I am totally comfortable with it and find it fascinating to interact with others. I am praying that God will bring blessings, growth, grace and hope to those who walk in this road less travel.

I have completed my spiritual direction training through Sustainable Faith’s two year School of Spiritual Direction. Throughout my 35+ years of student and pastoral ministry I have always been drawn to the aspect of spiritual formation of the heart and not just growth in knowledge. It wasn’t until two years ago that I was introduced to the practice of spiritual direction and actively pursued receiving spiritual direction and became engaged in the training.
I have my MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary and an MTh from Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary. I have been at my current position of associate pastor of a Lutheran church for over three decades. I am finding the tools of spiritual direction to be a significant enrichment to ministry and to life with the Lord.
My wife and I live in Poway, CA; we have three grown children who have families of their own (between their three families we have 12 grandchildren). I enjoy taking walks with my wife, running, yardwork and puttering around the house.
My desire in conducting spiritual direction is to create a safe place for individuals to listen to what God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is speaking into their life and to pursue their God-given call in life; to discover a deeper intimacy with the Lord. I am retired after 35 years in cross cultural misssions. In "retirement", I am active in offering spiritual direction, leading retreats and training cohorts to grow through contemplative practices and to be spiritual companions for others. It is a joy to me that all of the training and retreat opportunities are done with my wife, Patty, who is also a spiritual director. We were both trained in spiritual direction through Sustainable Faith, in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2016. We are living near and volunteer at the Hermitage, a wonderful retreat center in Three Rivers, Michigan.
Spiritual direction has had a transformative impact on both my wife and me and has been a huge blessing in deepening our own awareness of God and growth in our love and obedience to him. It has also been extremely rewarding to listen well to directees and to the Holy Spirit and to see, on a regular basis, the Holy Spirit give directees freedom and a growing intimacy with God that results in transformation.

He was trained by the Sustainable Faith School of Spiritual Direction (Vineyard USA) and holds an M.A. in Theology (Fuller Theological Seminary) as well as a graduate certificate in directing the Spiritual Exercises (Evangelical Seminary) and IFS Level 1 certificate (Central Connecticut State University).

Hello! I'm a Memphis resident who grew up in Wisconsin and have been part of the Church of Christ tradition my whole life. I attended seminary in Memphis and currently serve as a minister at a Church of Christ in the Memphis area. I primarily work with young adults and facilitate outreach ministry. I've been in ministry since 2015.

After working for several years in ministry, I completed training for spiritual direction through Lipscomb University. Spiritual direction has changed my life because it helped me move from a head knowledge about God to a heart felt encounter with God. I see the hunger and need for this in those I help minister to––be they young adults, refugees, those battling addiction––and I believe an encounter with the living God is key to our transformation.

In short, I have a passion to partner with people who are hungering in their soul for something real. I desire to meet with these people as Jesus has met me and ultimately help them see God's presence in their lives. Not with something novel or bigger or better; rather, with something real. Real community. Real conversations. Real intimacy with the Father, Son, and Spirit. I believe this can truly transform lives and satisfy our deepest longings. This can only happen by the power of the Spirit, our true Director.

In one sense, my spiritual direction journey began in the dark. In my walk with God, I have experienced several extended dark night seasons that taught me to listen, let go and learn. I have been learning to listen in the dark, straining my ears to hear the voice of Love. In that learning journey, I have learned to listen with and for others, inviting them into a deeper form of listening to and for themselves. As I sought safe places for myself and those closest to me, I found myself becoming a safe place of listening hospitality. People who are struggling or questioning often find solace walking with me, grounded and welcome as they are.

I am a recovering Evangelical who deeply loves that “stream of living water” and longs to see it renewed. Spiritual Direction and poetry have come together in my soul as I seek renewal in community, to offer wells of renewal and capacities for re-imagining wonder, trust and belonging especially as it relates to the Christian Scriptures. I tend to approach conversations poetically, looking for the lyric of God as he sings his song in the life of another. I am captivated by His word in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece,” (NLT) which reimagines each life through the lens of beauty. The Greek word used here is Poiema, where we get our English word, ‘poem,’ implying God’s work of art.

I have participated in several training journeys in spiritual formation and direction that have helped solidify this calling:

2008-2010 - Deeper Journey, a two year, eight retreat learning community through Crosspoint Ministries.

2017-2019 Renovare Institute, a two-year learning experience with four weeklong residencies

2021-2023 - Spiritual Direction certification through Portland Seminary in Portland, OR.

Have you ever wanted more from your relationship with God but are unsure how to go deeper with Him? Pause from the busyness of life to be with and listen to God, who speaks to your longings. Spiritual Direction with me at Beloved Discipleship is an invitation to a one-on-one ministry guiding us prayerfully into intimacy with God, helping you discern "God Moments" in your life and respond to those out of love for Jesus.

I have seen that many Christians keep tremendously busy in their service to God. Yet, an intimate relationship with God, knowing and experiencing God's presence and love, gives the abundant life that Jesus offers (John 10:10). A quote that I love is by Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 - 1153): "If then you are wise, you will show yourself rather as a reservoir than as a canal. A canal spreads abroad water as it receives it, and a reservoir waits until it is filled before overflowing, and thus without loss to itself communicates its superabundant water. In the Church at the present day we have many canals but few reservoirs."*

I love this quote because this may be said of the Church today as well. God invites his beloved children to live lives overflowing with his love and power. Yet, many today live "drained, dry, and exhausted."* How do we experience a life with God that overflows rather than drains? Whether you are in a joyous or dry season, I have seen that spiritual direction, an ancient church ministry, is a gift to experience.

I have long been passionate about guiding people into deeper intimacy with God. I hold a Master's in Education and a Doctorate in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care from Denver Seminary. I have served overseas with The Navigators for thirty-plus years and now provide soul care for others living abroad. I have years of experience listening to God alongside other Christ followers and, by God's grace, have helped guide many Christians and not-yet Christians as they seek to know God. I offer spiritual direction and retreats in both Spanish and English.

I am a graduate of the Institute for Spiritual Formation where I received an MA in Spiritual Formation and Soulcare. I have been practicing spiritual direction since 2006.

I have found my spiritual life often parallels my physical journey through life with its various twists and turns. I am from the South and have lived in various states throughout that area. I received my MDiv from Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama, moved to Tennessee when I got married and started a family. We followed God's leading to California where I trained and practiced as a spiritual director for 13 years before moving back to Tennessee. About Me

I have over 30 years of ministry experience as a pastor and missionary in many contexts and cultures. I am an ordained minister, hold a Master of Divinity degree, and am trained in Spiritual Direction through Sustainable Faith. I am comfortable connecting with persons from other faith traditions or with someone who may be in a season of doubt. I have my own experience with grief, pain, and disappointment and have found that places of struggle, times of transition, and moments of grief are fertile soil for personal transformation.

My experience as a Spiritual Director emerged from my own need to move beyond a knowledge and information centered faith to a more experiential encounter with Jesus. Years of struggling as a missionary and deep challenges in relationships with my adult children required a greater depth to my faith. My pain was God's invitation to move toward a new awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence. Meeting with a Spiritual Director was a key part to setting out on that journey.

I am heavily involved locally with a non-profit ministry that brings help and healing to persons coming out of prison and addiction. I also come alongside cross-cultural workers to provide a proactive intervention that moves them toward God's sustaining presence.

My wife and I love serving and adventuring together to places all around the world. I enjoy hiking, cycling, and a good cup of coffee.

About Me

My experience as a listener began in my relationships with family, friends and God. I was gifted additional grace as a listener when my husband and I were invited on a church planting adventure in 1984. My listening skills continued to develop as a youth leader, women's ministry leader, Sunday School teacher and in pastoral ministry roles. Completing my certification as a spiritual director in 2017 was a gift of grace as I experienced God honing my skills and calling me to offer presence to people as they wrestle with life's questions and God's relationship to them. It is a privilege to listen with unconditional positive regard and love to each one sitting in the chair across from me. In March of 2024 I completed my training to offer the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, a retreat in daily life. It is a privilege to companion exercitants as they make the Exercises, a life-changing school of prayer, healing and discernment.

I have deep respect for each individual and their sacred journey. I have a holy curiosity about the work that Beloved Trinity is up to in each person I meet with. I believe each person is an expert on their own experience and it humbles me to be a part of God's gentle process of formation in their lives. The joy is my front row seat to the miracle of transformation in each one.
I am honored to be called Grammy to Mandy and Nathan, Mom to Jeremy, Mechelle and Maria and "Honey" to my husband of almost 42 years.

Before I was I spiritual director, I was an RN in community services. I like to think that I went from healthcare to soul care!
I welcome any directee who has a desire to explore relationship with the Beloved Trinity, contend with their relationship with Trinity and/or experience a safe place to voice the hard questions that rise when life isn't going as imagined or hoped.

Getting to come alongside women on their journey with Jesus is one of the most life-giving things I get to do. What a joy to get to see women become more rooted and grounded in Jesus’ love, become increasingly aware of His presence and untangled from the various things that keep us from being who we were meant to be! It would be my honor to walk with you a while.

I received my Spiritual Direction training with Sustainable Faith’s School of Spiritual Direction and have been giving direction since 2014. I am originally from California, but have Dutch roots and have been living and ministering in the Netherlands for the past 15+ years. I love doing life with my husband and young son.

I am a life-long follower of Jesus who embraced Christian contemplative spirituality and spiritual direction later in my life. As a graduate of Christos, it is a privilege to companion others by holding their story gently and prayerfully, encouraging them to listen for what God might be saying through life's everyday experiences. Often the questions we bring point toward a longing for a deeper spiritual journey, and spiritual direction can provide an opportunity to carefully tend to those longings and discern God's movement in our lives.

As Senior Director of Christos Center for Spiritual Formation, I hear stories everyday of the life-changing experience that spiritual direction often brings to others, and each story deepens my sense of call to be available to journey with those who seek it.

I offer one hour spiritual direction sessions in my private study at home in Wheaton, IL or I am also willing to meet at an outside location of your choosing in Wheaton and the surrounding area. My standard fee is $60/hr, but it is negotiable if needed.
