My hope in spiritual direction is to journey with others into deeper experiential encounters with God, that result in lives lived with greater love and freedom. It is a delight to explore and discover with others how God has been and is intimately at work in their lives. I received an M.A. Spiritual Formation & Soul Care at the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Biola University. I also received my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and am a Registered Nurse. With training in nursing, spiritual direction and psychology, I have a holistic and integrated approach in spiritual direction. I enjoy individual and group spiritual direction, as well as retreats for groups who seek a deeper experience of God and desire refreshment in their spiritual lives.

As a spiritual director, there is a sweetness and delight in welcoming fellow companions into the quiet and stillness of a safe and sacred space. We sit down together in the loving presence of the Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit, and notice where God is in your life story. Through contemplative prayer and conversation we listen, reflect, and discern together what the Holy Spirit may be showing you.

Throughout many years, I have journeyed on a continuous path of seeking and knowing God more day by day. Life in all its ordinary ways is where I have experienced the tensions of growing in my faith with God and others. The paths have been deepening experiences in God’s generous love, grace, goodness, through struggles and sorrows, sickness, healing, loss--the ordinary life of this world.

Melanie is from the Central Valley of California, and has lived for the last 15 years in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her husband Brian, three grown children and their spouses, and two grandchildren. I have walked with Jesus for most of my life. In the past 20 years the journey has become almost a pilgrimage, moving in a sort of spiral with a sense of growing (and ebbing) movement of intimacy with the Triune Mystery of God. As part of this unfolding life, I married over 47 years ago and we together with God created two sons. We are grandparents to two teenagers!
Significant to my own spiritual formation have been particular rhythms and practices, including learning to press into solitude and silence, exploring contemplative postures of prayer, praying the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius (10 years ago), Spiritual Director Formation (8 years ago), membership of a Transforming Community (through the Transforming Center) and ongoing spiritual direction. I am currently co-leading a Confessional Community (through The CBK with Curt Thompson) and learning much about how to co-create and nurture outposts of beauty in our shared interpersonal neurobiology.
I look forward to walking with others as we both attend to the voice of the Spirit. I am currently apprenticing as an Ignatian guide and am able to accept retreatants for the Spiritual Exercises (19th annotation) while in training. In the near future, I will begin training in trauma recovery and healing, with a special focus on global Kingdom workers. I am part of a 12-step recovery group. In the past, I have offered contemplative retreats and am available to speak or lead retreats, particularly those focused on spiritual formation/transformation.

Mission: Because I trust that the eternal is near and knowable, my mission in providing spiritual direction is to assist directees in entering quiet and contemplative time where they can strengthen their awareness of God’s faithful presence and experience grace.

Life-giving Paradox
One tenet of the Celtic spiritual tradition is that heaven and earth are separated by only three feet and in some places -- thin places – that distance is even smaller. Here’s the paradox: While the eternal is as near as all that, it remains a vast, often frightening, mystery.

At times, that holy mystery touches us, reminding us that there is something more, something bigger, something both intimately knowable and cosmically unknowable.

Embracing a paradox is slow, challenging work. It is an endeavor best undertaken with an anam cara, a soul friend – one who offers another a sanctuary, a safe place in which to be still and lean into that holy mystery.

My spiritual direction practice is built on that foundation of holy mystery, thin places, and the presence of an anam cara.

Training: I was trained in the art of spiritual direction though the Tending the Holy program of the Christos Center for Spiritual Formation (https://www.christoscenter.org/) and commissioned as a spiritual director May 2023.

As a writer, reader, and retired college-level English instructor, I bring to spiritual direction a lifetime of imaginative thinking, image analysis, and love of story. I am available for individual and small group direction as well as a variety of focused retreats.

The glory of God is a human person fully alive. - St. Irenaeus

In each and every interaction we have with one another, we have the opportunity to move each other closer toward health and wholeness as we become more like Christ. At every stage of life, people need to know that they are seen, heard, and known. When people recognize that their existence is valuable, they will contribute to the flourishing of our world as God intended.

As a spiritual director, I consider it a great honor to facilitate a space for individuals and groups to become more attuned to how God is at work in their particular lives. It is a gift to listen together, and explore what the Spirit might be doing.

I completed formal spiritual director training at the Institution of Spiritual Formation at Biola University when I received my MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care. I am currently a staff director at Biola University, and I am open to meeting with a limited number of new directees either online or in-person (in the Orange County area).

I spend a lot of time reading, taking walks, dreaming up my next international trip, meeting up with people, and thinking (also talking) about what I believe about God, humanity, and our world. I have a degree in cultural anthropology and an MA in Spiritual Formation. I’m a pastor to high school students, a self-proclaimed geography expert, and I want to speak as many languages as possible. I can never keep up with grocery shopping, I think I’m better at basketball than I actually am, and I get very caught up in existential thoughts about existence. I love airports, ice cream (even though it hurts my stomach every single time) and I’m a very mediocre small-talker. Let’s just get into it already.

About Me

I received my Spiritual Direction training at Biola University where I graduated with my M.A. in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care in May 2009. During that time I participated in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises Program (Nineteenth annotation) at the Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange, California.
Meeting with my own spiritual director has continued to be a valuable place where am encouraged draw closer to the Lord. In that space I experience another pair of eyes to see and ears to hear what the Lord might be doing in ways I would not have otherwise noticed. I feel called to, in turn, provide that kind of space for others where they can experience a deeper awareness of God’s presence and how He is uniquely working in their lives. My training has increased my ability to discern the Holy Spirit’s leading and how He may be drawing a person into a more intimate relationship with God. My direction experiences over the past 10 years has been with people from ages 15 to 60, who are sensing their relationship with the Lord is not where they wish it were and are seeking wisdom and discernment.
In my spare time I love running, biking, golfing, and hiking, all the while looking for God’s presence. I seek Him in creation, and in solitude but also in retreat (both guided and unguided).

It is a privilege to sit in a direction room with others, discovering with them what God is speaking and discerning together how they are responding to His voice. My greatest passion is seeing people discover the easy yoke and the abundant life that is available through Christ.

I received my training in Spiritual Direction as well as an MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care from Talbot School of Theology. I also have a MA in Organizational Leadership.

I served for 21 years as a Pastor at a large church in Long Beach, CA. This experience gives me a unique vantage point in listening to pastors. Currently, I’m an Adjunct Faculty member at Biola University and a Staff Spiritual Director at the Institute for Spiritual Formation.

I have been married to my beautiful wife for 30 years. We have two children, one who recently graduated with his MA and one who is a senior in college.

I discerned the call to spiritual direction while completing my Masters of Theological Studies in Spiritual Formation at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto. Like many spiritual directors, I was captured by the incredible privilege it is to companion someone as they discern the voice of the loving Creator in their lives.

I have the honor of holding the title of CSD (Certified Spiritual Director) through CCPC Global for more than 10 years, alongside the title of CSDS (Certified Spiritual Director Supervision) through the same organization.

In recent years, I have also been given the privilege and grace of accompanying other directors as a supervisor, and as the founder of a relational training program in spiritual direction called the Anam Cara Apprenticeship. About Me

My own journey into spiritual direction emerged indirectly through personal struggles with an image of God as emotionally distant and strict (pictured with His arms crossed and a frown on His face). My distorted image of God eventually shipwrecked my faith and caused me to leave the church for several years. During these intervening years I gradually stumbled onto the writings of Henri Nouwen, Thomas Merton, Richard Foster, and Dallas Willard, all of whom rekindled my desire to explore a deeper dimension of the spiritual life and which subsequently led to my enrollment in the two-year Christian spiritual formation program at the Renovare Institute. My participation in the Renovare program profoundly shifted my image and experience of the Divine and introduced me to the exciting truth that we have access to the love, power, and goodness of the kingdom of God here-and-now. My own experience of spiritual direction over the past 5 years has deepened this awareness of God’s abiding presence and led me to obtain a certificate in spiritual companioning/direction at Lindenwood Retreat and Conference Center in northern Indiana.

I believe that A.W. Tozer’s quote – “what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us” – provides a solid foundation for the practice of spiritual direction. As Tozer further notes, this is not a mere intellectual belief about the nature of God, but involves a deep heart-felt knowledge of who we experience God to be for us personally. But here’s the rub: there is often a gap between our professed beliefs about God and our image or picture of Him. A primary focus of spiritual direction for me involves closing this gap so you are able to seek a deeper experience of God and to pursue a more intimate fellowship with the Trinity. On a practical level, this means that I aspire to listen deeply to the longings hidden in your story, and to create a safe, sacred place in which we discern the promptings and guidance of the Holy Spirit (the true spiritual director) through prayerful, contemplative silence.

Professionally, I worked as a clinical psychologist for 30 years and taught several counseling-related courses for both secular and Christian universities, including 8 years of teaching spiritual formation online for the master’s counseling program at Colorado Christian University.

My primary interests as a spiritual director are: (1) helping individuals revise their picture/image of God: (2) inviting them into life-giving spiritual practices which nourish their relationship with the Trinity; and (3) partnering with them to discern the Holy Spirit’s leading in their everyday life.

I currently live in Crown Point, IN with my wife. We enjoy spending time with our eight grandchildren, traveling, and working out at the YMCA. I also enjoy teaching classes in spiritual formation at the local Methodist church where we worship, listening to contemporary Christian music, watching my favorite sports’ teams, and savoring a really good cup of coffee!

Attentive listening is sacred; a treasured gift that nourishes and strengthens one’s journey through life. Familiar with adversity and challenges, Richard’s strength and resilience is a result of HOPE found through submission to God’s purpose and strong confidence that God is ever active and always present. Others describe Richard as compassionate, humorous, honest, a leader, pastor, shepherd, accepting, non-judgmental, and trustworthy. He speaks and writes in a way that is inviting, loving, and kind. He listens and is an encourager. Richard is an ordained minister with the Evangelical Covenant Church and speaks in various cross-denominational settings. He was trained and certified as a spiritual director (2010) and supervisor (2015) through the C. John Weborg Center for Spiritual Direction (North Park Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL). A seasoned, empowering, and compassionate leader, he devotes his life to assisting others to discover HOPE through writing, speaking, and offering spiritual care to pastors and ministry leaders. Richard serves as the Director of Discover Hope, an outreach ministry of MSW Ministries, a 501(c)(3) organization. He resides in sunny Glendale, Arizona with his wife, Vicki. He’s always up for a round of golf, and enjoys a hot cup of coffee to keep him caffeinated for the benefit of others!

Hello and welcome :)

What I need you to know is that the love of God has changed my life. I spent many years trying to prove, achieve, and earn my way, and God orchestrated a divine rescue plan. It’s a journey I didn’t know to ask for and one I’m so incredibly grateful for. If you’re here, perhaps you know there may be more for you, too.

Spiritual direction is not a fixer-ministry. There is no prescribed or uniform way to grow closer to God. However, when we gather together and ask Him to come, He does. The growth is often slow yet lasting, life-transforming, and relationship-altering.

And because it’s hard to knock on the door of a stranger:

I grew up not knowing God, but He drew me in through the local church right before I graduated high school. I fell in love with Him and the family He invited me into. I married my husband shortly after, and we’ve pastored and served together for nearly 30 years. We’ve been through our share of “church hurt” and don’t have blinders on or pass judgment on where each person is in their relationship with church.

I have 5 almost-grown kids. Some of my most humbling formation has happened within the walls of our home, witnessed by these humans who get a front-row view.

I’ve lived in 30 homes in my lifetime, and I’ve moved willingly and unwillingly. I’ve come to (mostly) face the trauma of my childhood, my struggles with mental health, and my continual failure as a perfect-human. However, I overcome through the power of my testimony. I seek intimacy, deep inner joy, peace, and the power of the Holy Spirit. I’d love to journey with you as you do the same.

As a certified spiritual director, I would be honored to assist you in your spiritual journey. I have experienced personal loss and have journeyed through grief. I believe knowing your identity in Christ Jesus is essential for purpose and meaning. I love the intimate time of listening and assisting as the Holy Spirit works to reveal, cleanse, and renew.

After the tragic loss of my husband in 2012, I went through my grief journey and transition into widowhood. God was so present to me in every way and has led me into a newness of life. Today, I am a Christian radio host in Los Angeles, my weekly radio show is called Real Life. I have authored one book "Picking Up My Shattered Pieces" and enjoy encouraging those going through loss and grief. I am also skilled in helping those struggling through life transitions: divorce, prodigal child, career changes, etc. I think being real and ridding one's self of pretense is the key to living in the Kingdom. It's a process for sure, and it keeps us on our toes! I love helping other's as they seek those deep parts of their soul.

I view spiritual direction as companioning another in their walk with Jesus. For those who have not begun that journey, I am open to listening to the path one is on now and accompanying a directee as he/she draws near to God. I am open to meeting with men or women, am part of a non-denominational church body but have a background in denominational settings. I have a Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and moved into the practice of spiritual direction after taking part in a 9 month Soul Care program offered by WellSpringCA in Menlo Park. I consider the spiritual practice of holy listening a sacred space where God shows up in ways that do not occur outside an environment of sitting before him with open hearts and open hands.
