Ever since I have been drawn to conversations exploring where God intersects with the joys and challenges of real life. In 2016, I began having these conversations as a spiritual director.

I believe each of us is God’s beloved and the spiritual journey is primarily a journey of allowing the love of God to find its way into deeper and deeper parts of our heart. It is my deepest joy to serve as spiritual director in Seattle - either in person or on line.

My underlying conviction is that God is always present, always active, and always loving. I believe that there is much more on offer in our lives with God, if we would only stop and listen, and listen again. I believe that God's doors are already flung open to us and that much of our journey is simply choosing to "begin again". And again. In doing so we learn to walk with the risen Christ in open honesty, free to receive His love. Having drunk deeply of His love we grow in our desire to join Him in relationship and in His projects.

Together, with my wife Renee, we have founded Soul Care Seattle at The Layne: an urban retreat home in Seattle, dedicated as a quiet and safe place for people to explore and deepen their relationship with God in solitude and community. Either virtually or in person, at The Layne, we seek to serve individuals who are in crisis, a season of change, or simply want more out of their relationship with Christ. We have a special heart for companioning those who are in ministry, experience loss and/or infertility, as well as those who identify as LGBT or same sex attracted and their friends and family.

We offer the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, the 19th Annotation. This 9 month prayer retreat in daily life begins each year in September.

Welcome Friend, my name is Jen Manglos. There are many ways I could describe myself, but I like to start with the truest part - I am God’s beloved. And as a spiritual director, supervisor, pastor, and writer, I delight in helping others discover their own belovedness in God.

I graduated from the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot Theological Seminary in May 2010. During my time there I received training in spiritual direction and discovered the profound gift of creating space for another to be listened to and to notice God’s invitations in life. I currently offer individual and group direction, as well as individual and group supervision and pilgrimage coaching, and am available to speak at retreats and conferences. Embodiment, hospitality, and storytelling characterize my approach, as well as pilgrimage, having completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage through Spain in 2018. I am available to meet in-person in Seattle or online.

I formerly coordinated retreats for Saddleback Church’s Rancho Capistrano property before moving to Seattle, Washington in 2019 for a pastoral role with Bethany Community Church (finished role in 2021). One day, I hope to open my own retreat house to care for pastors and church leaders, inviting them into “unforced rhythms of grace” with God. Athanasius says, "The Risen Christ makes life a perpetual feast," and I thoroughly enjoy this feast of a life through steaming cups of coffee, walks and hikes through the PNW, sharing meals with dear friends, and discovering new films, books, musicals, and podcasts. I’ve been married for more than thirty-five years to Jim and we have two sons, one living nearby, and one in heaven. I was privileged to be involved in leadership with Bible Study Fellowship for ten years. I volunteer at my church where I currently serve on the Elder Board. I have a strong creative streak and love to write music and lyrics for musical theater. I’ve also experienced the personal heartbreak and grief of a loved one’s mental illness, addiction, and incarceration. No matter the context or role, I always find myself accompanying others toward threshold moments. My 30+ years as a bi-vocational pastor provides a unique reservoir of experience from which to offer spiritual accompaniment in everyday life and work. During this time, my prayer life was significantly transformed by the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola and studies in improvisation.

I trained as a Spiritual Director in the tradition of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola with SEEL of Puget Sound, after having been informally mentored for several years in the practice of spiritual direction by a Jesuit priest. Ignatian spiritual direction is cultivating the art of discernment, that is to hear and recognize the voice of Jesus through Scripture and prayer. This leads to freedom, clarity, and focus for life and ministry, along with confidence to act in accordance with God’s leading. . . so you may be able to discern what is best. . . (Philippians 1:9-10; Luke 24:13-32, John 10:27)

I wear Luke-Acts Improv lenses like an actor on an improv stage finding his place in the story. “Luke-Acts Improv” is a metaphor for reframing our lives in the transformative drama of the biblical story. This Gospel frame helps set the stage to see God in all things; to notice, listen, and discern where God may be at work.

I am also a trained Ignatian retreat guide for the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life.

In recent years, my experience has been significantly impacted by becoming a Benedictine Oblate, at Westminster Abbey, Mission, BC, Canada. The Benedictine Rule, with its spirituality of work, has a great deal to offer the individual grappling with issues of work-life balance.

It’s a joy to be able to offer these streams of living water in Christ to support and encourage others, “that their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in love, to have all the riches of assured understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:2-3)

I have written or contributed to five books. I have taught and coached many leaders in my various roles and now feel called to embrace the vocation of spiritual direction on a more full time basis. I have completed three years of training as a spiritual director and been under supervision.

My view of spiritual direction can be summarized by Frank J. Houdek in his book, "Guided by the Spirit."

Spiritual direction is a conversation, a dialogue, between two people. In such a conversation one person aides another, often by a process of question and answer, to express his or her experience of personal faith and mystery.

My goal in direction, through this spiritual conversation, is to assist my directees in discerning how God is presently at work in their lives, so that they might more consciously and continually experience His presence in their lives.

About Me

God has and continues to use the events of my own story to draw me closer to him. And in the context of that growing love relationship, He equips me and leads me to people and places for his life-giving, holy appointments. Mostly, that involves helping people discover and live into their truest identity as a beloved child of God.

I grew up in a blended family, attending Catholic churches (and still appreciate much of that tradition). Years of (behind the scenes) teenage rebellion led me to fully surrender my life to Jesus early in college. Since then, I worshipped in a mainline Protestant church for many years, and more recently, am active in a large, theologically evangelical Christian church. I was trained as a director at Gonzaga University, and appreciate contemplative and Ignatian practices for being with Jesus. I am also trained in inner healing prayer, and am presented with regular opportunities to pray with those who carry emotional wounds, or simply feel spiritually “stuck.”

My husband Andy has led a thriving Christian camping ministry for over 30 years, where I serve as staff chaplain to our summer staff team of 40 college students. During the school year, I work part-time in Chapel Ministries at Whitworth University, where I meet with students for spiritual direction and prayer. I also love nature, being active outside, cooking good food, and being with and laughing (sometimes crying) with friends and family.

And my family... raising five children (plus the heartache of multiple miscarriages and the joy and challenge of adoption) with my husband has provided God many opportunities to shape, forgive, stretch, bless and grow me into his likeness. They are all young adults now, three of whom are married (to amazing people).
