I love to hold space for people as they reflect on the journey of their souls. God won my heart over 30 years ago during a particularly difficult time in my life. Ever since I have been drawn to conversations exploring where God intersects with the joys and challenges of real life. In 2016, I began having these conversations as a spiritual director.

I believe each of us is God’s beloved and the spiritual journey is primarily a journey of allowing the love of God to find its way into deeper and deeper parts of our heart. My joy is to provide a safe environment to engage with God right where you are. No performing, no pat answers. Just making holy space for you and God.

I am a Seattle native who graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Psychology and Speech Communications. I received my spiritual direction training through SoulFormation’s Academy and School of Spiritual Direction and am an active member of their community of spiritual directors. I also offer supervision to spiritual directors and facilitate Space for God retreats. My husband and I live in community near the University of Washington campus and have 3 grown/almost-grown kids.

About Me

It is my deepest joy to serve as spiritual director in Seattle - either in person or on line.

My underlying conviction is that God is always present, always active, and always loving. I believe that there is much more on offer in our lives with God, if we would only stop and listen, and listen again. I believe that God's doors are already flung open to us and that much of our journey is simply choosing to "begin again". And again. In doing so we learn to walk with the risen Christ in open honesty, free to receive His love. Having drunk deeply of His love we grow in our desire to join Him in relationship and in His projects.

Together, with my wife Renee, we have founded Soul Care Seattle at The Layne: an urban retreat home in Seattle, dedicated as a quiet and safe place for people to explore and deepen their relationship with God in solitude and community. Either virtually or in person, at The Layne, we seek to serve individuals who are in crisis, a season of change, or simply want more out of their relationship with Christ. We have a special heart for companioning those who are in ministry, experience loss and/or infertility, as well as those who identify as LGBT or same sex attracted and their friends and family.

We offer the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, the 19th Annotation. This 9 month prayer retreat in daily life begins each year in September.

About Me

Welcome Friend, my name is Jen Manglos. There are many ways I could describe myself, but I like to start with the truest part - I am God’s beloved. And as a spiritual director, supervisor, pastor, and writer, I delight in helping others discover their own belovedness in God.

I graduated from the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot Theological Seminary in May 2010. During my time there I received training in spiritual direction and discovered the profound gift of creating space for another to be listened to and to notice God’s invitations in life. I currently offer individual and group direction, as well as individual and group supervision and pilgrimage coaching, and am available to speak at retreats and conferences. Embodiment, hospitality, and storytelling characterize my approach, as well as pilgrimage, having completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage through Spain in 2018. I am available to meet in-person in Seattle or online.

I formerly coordinated retreats for Saddleback Church’s Rancho Capistrano property before moving to Seattle, Washington in 2019 for a pastoral role with Bethany Community Church (finished role in 2021). One day, I hope to open my own retreat house to care for pastors and church leaders, inviting them into “unforced rhythms of grace” with God. Athanasius says, "The Risen Christ makes life a perpetual feast," and I thoroughly enjoy this feast of a life through steaming cups of coffee, walks and hikes through the PNW, sharing meals with dear friends, and discovering new films, books, musicals, and podcasts. I’ve been married for more than thirty-five years to Jim and we have two sons, one living nearby, and one in heaven. I was privileged to be involved in leadership with Bible Study Fellowship for ten years. I volunteer at my church where I currently serve on the Elder Board. I have a strong creative streak and love to write music and lyrics for musical theater. I’ve also experienced the personal heartbreak and grief of a loved one’s mental illness, addiction, and incarceration. It was this heartbreak that eventually opened the door for me to enter the ministry of spiritual direction. No matter the context or role, I always find myself accompanying others toward threshold moments. My 30+ years as a bi-vocational pastor provides a unique reservoir of experience from which to offer spiritual accompaniment in everyday life and work. In midlife, I updated my seminary education, earning a Doctor of Ministry degree in transformational leadership. My dissertation project made the case for a major reframing and paradigm shift in Christian formation and mission. During this time, my prayer life was significantly transformed by the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola and studies in improvisation.

I trained as a Spiritual Director in the tradition of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola with SEEL of Puget Sound, after having been informally mentored for several years in the practice of spiritual direction by a Jesuit priest. Ignatian spiritual direction is cultivating the art of discernment, that is to hear and recognize the voice of Jesus through Scripture and prayer. This leads to freedom, clarity, and focus for life and ministry, along with confidence to act in accordance with God’s leading. . . so you may be able to discern what is best. . . (Philippians 1:9-10; Luke 24:13-32, John 10:27)

I wear Luke-Acts Improv lenses like an actor on an improv stage finding his place in the story. “Luke-Acts Improv” is a metaphor for reframing our lives in the transformative drama of the biblical story. This Gospel frame helps set the stage to see God in all things; to notice, listen, and discern where God may be at work.

I am also a trained Ignatian retreat guide for the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life.

In recent years, my experience has been significantly impacted by becoming a Benedictine Oblate, at Westminster Abbey, Mission, BC, Canada. The Benedictine Rule, with its spirituality of work, has a great deal to offer the individual grappling with issues of work-life balance.

It’s a joy to be able to offer these streams of living water in Christ to support and encourage others, “that their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in love, to have all the riches of assured understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:2-3)

I love to work with people who find themselves disconcerted, or curious about their response to God or their theology amidst trauma or transition.
As a young teen I fell in love with this Jesus, who washes feet, cooks’ fish, goes after the outcast, and welcomes children. Decades later, mountains climbed, I remain enamored. This passion fuels my work as a spiritual director.
I work with Christian pastors, ministry leaders and people inside and outside church, to address the impact that abuse, neglect, insecure attachment, and trauma has on our relationship with God. Left unaddressed, these experiences can undermine best efforts to overcome a variety of issues such as; hijacking emotions like anger and fear, tendencies toward addiction, anxiety, and dissociation, all of which contribute to frustration in ministry and cloud our relationship with God.

I am a professional vocal accompanist, choir director, and a former pastor of music ministries at Christian & Missionary Alliance churches in Toronto and Vancouver. About Me

My background is in the church and academia, where I have served in a variety of roles for 35 years. My personal spiritual perspective is what I would call contemplative evangelical and firmly orthodox. I have been ordained in the Evangelical Free Church of America and hold a Doctor of Ministry in leadership and a Ph.D. in socioeconomics (Spiritual Capital Theory). I have written or contributed to five books. I have taught and coached many leaders in my various roles and now feel called to embrace the vocation of spiritual direction on a more full time basis. I have completed three years of training as a spiritual director and been under supervision.

My view of spiritual direction can be summarized by Frank J. Houdek in his book, "Guided by the Spirit."

Spiritual direction is a conversation, a dialogue, between two people. In such a conversation one person aides another, often by a process of question and answer, to express his or her experience of personal faith and mystery.

My goal in direction, through this spiritual conversation, is to assist my directees in discerning how God is presently at work in their lives, so that they might more consciously and continually experience His presence in their lives.

Nish studied Religious Studies and Philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder and completed her Spiritual Direction training through Sustainable Faith, with ongoing Spiritual Formation education through Loyola University Chicago. I like to come alongside others to explore their thoughts, plans, and desires. I combine my experience as a trainer, mentor, teacher, and chaplain. I enjoy walking with people as they experience God’s connection and revelation. I've served ministry leaders worldwide and like to meet new friends and learn about their cultures.

My style is based on the contemplative listening model while asking thoughtful questions; it’s like a conversation over coffee with your trusted friend.

I retired as a technician and trainer from the FAA while maintaining a bi-vocational ministry. My wife and I have two married daughters and six grand kiddos.

About Me

In one sense, my spiritual direction journey began in the dark. In my walk with God, I have experienced several extended dark night seasons that taught me to listen, let go and learn. I have been learning to listen in the dark, straining my ears to hear the voice of Love. In that learning journey, I have learned to listen with and for others, inviting them into a deeper form of listening to and for themselves. As I sought safe places for myself and those closest to me, I found myself becoming a safe place of listening hospitality. People who are struggling or questioning often find solace walking with me, grounded and welcome as they are.

I am a recovering Evangelical who deeply loves that “stream of living water” and longs to see it renewed. Spiritual Direction and poetry have come together in my soul as I seek renewal in community, to offer wells of renewal and capacities for re-imagining wonder, trust and belonging especially as it relates to the Christian Scriptures. I tend to approach conversations poetically, looking for the lyric of God as he sings his song in the life of another. I am captivated by His word in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece,” (NLT) which reimagines each life through the lens of beauty. The Greek word used here is Poiema, where we get our English word, ‘poem,’ implying God’s work of art.

I have participated in several training journeys in spiritual formation and direction that have helped solidify this calling:

2008-2010 - Deeper Journey, a two year, eight retreat learning community through Crosspoint Ministries.

2017-2019 Renovare Institute, a two-year learning experience with four weeklong residencies

2021-2023 - Spiritual Direction certification through Portland Seminary in Portland, OR.
