Professional career includes advertising, marketing, international economic development, investment brokerage, and trading. I have been in full-time ministry as a coach/counselor/Director of Training at Grace Ministries, and now serve the body of Christ by providing individual and group spiritual direction. With a masters degree in Christian Spiritual Formation and Leadership (Friends University) and Spiritual Direction Certification (Portland Seminary), I create space for you to breathe and to hear the "still quiet voice" of God.

I'm a Japanese American who has lived in the Washington D.C. metro most of my life. I'm married to my high school sweetheart, who is a poet/writer/artist, and we have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. I used to coach football, freshwater fish, and ride a Harley, but now I live a contemplative life with my 170 lb. English Mastiff, Winston, and is a Dance Dad.

The gift of Spiritual Direction nurtures the desire to live with God in a proximity and realness of life.

I love to create this contemplative space for others, to be present and attentive to the Triune God. I sensed an invitation to the ministry of Spiritual Direction couple years ago as I realized huge disconnect between what the Bible says and the experience of relationship with God.

I received my training in Spiritual DIrection through Leadership Transformation's Selah Certificate Program. As I started offering spiritual direction to others, I noticed clearly how God leads and invites us to the process of spiritual formation. I recognized that offering Spiritual Direction is a way to respond to my deep sense of calling to support others in their discovery of God in the midst of their life.

I currently serve with Josiah Venture, where I am responsible for leading and managing christian camp and conference center in Poland. I live in a small town of Żory, with my wife and two sons. We are part of small church community where we serve.

Jody Thomae is an embodied spiritual director; yoga therapist; and the author of "Jesus In My Practice" and "The Rocks Cry Out," as well as two books in the Bible Studies to Nurture the Creative Spirit Within series: "God’s Creative Gift" and "The Creator’s Healing Power."

With over two decades of experience in in both ministry and body-oriented work, Jody began combining faith and fitness together in 2013. As a Certified Spiritual Director through Healing Care Ministry, she is part of the teaching faculty, teaching about embodiment and creativity in the spiritual life. She graduated from Ashland Theological Seminary in 2009 with a degree in spiritual formation.

She offers retreats, embodied training, and one-on-one direction through Rooted & Reaching Embodied Care: Integrated Spiritual Guidance and Caregiving for Mind, Body, Spirit & Soul. Rooted & Reaching Embodied Care is a unique combination of spiritual direction, Healing Care Ministries Formational Prayer, worshipful movement, embodied prayer, and yoga therapy—all from a body-focused, trauma-informed, and Christ-centered perspective. It is designed to provide spiritual guidance, compassionate care, and integrated instruction in order to live a more fully embodied, whole-hearted life. In-person offerings at her home studio at Pleasant HIll Lake in north central Ohio.

Her passion is to portray the message of Christ’s desperate and unfailing love for His people to help sustain the hearts of the broken and weary. She is particularly interested in the reclamation of the body in the spiritual life.

“God comes to us disguised as our life.” –Paula D’Arcy

To me, Spiritual Direction is companioning with someone in their spiritual journey for a richer relationship and encounter with God, helping them recognize God's love, movements, and invitations in their life and their circumstances. It's a safe place to process the "stuff" of life--emotions, questions, struggles.

I have been walking with Christ for 35+ years, and stumbled upon the ministry of spiritual direction, alongside silence and solitude, about 18 years ago during a time of crisis in my life when my normal faith rhythms were no longer sustaining me. I had tons of head knowledge and theology, but my heart came nowhere close to reflecting what I believed. Think a bobble-head with a grinch tiny heart. And yet, I had studied every book in the Bible and was actively involved with ministry. Something was wrong. In His kindness, Jesus has had me on a journey of becoming truly rooted and grounded in His love--the bedrock of all transformation--and has used spiritual direction, silence and solitude, and other spiritual practices to foster this in my life. My desire is to offer to others what has been a catalyst for transformation in my own life.

I have an MA in Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Direction from Richmont Graduate University in Atlanta. We have recently moved back to the Nashville area after having lived in Johnson City, TN for about a decade. I have been married to my wonderful, funny husband JT since 1998, have a college-aged son Cole, and two spoiled dogs named Ridge and Roan. I love hiking, gardening, reading, going on adventures, and eating yummy food with friends or family.

My greatest joy is providing a space where I can witness Jesus meeting others exactly where they are and leading them into deeper intimacy with Him and all of the beautiful gifts that entails.

My style is warm, relational, and gentle and influenced by Ignatian Spirituality, the Enneagram, Healing Prayer, and my own therapy with a gifted counselor trained through the Allender Center.

I grew up in a Christian home and attended Calvary University in Kansas City where I received a B.S. in Theology and Biblical Counseling. I spent a lot of my adult life asleep to my own gifts, passions, and calling, instead seeing my role as helping my husband and children live into their God-given callings. In my early 40's, I found myself in a place where my theological box that contained "God" wasn't big enough or strong enough to handle my current life circumstances or the trauma that had been compounding for 40 years.

In a place of complete desperation, I cried out to God. He met me in the most personal and tender ways. He eventually led me to complete a two-year Advanced Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Direction cohort program through Moody Bible Institute. This was a time of deep healing and transformation where God also revealed to me "where my deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." (Frederick Buechner)

I have lived on several continents and in several countries and states. I currently reside in Lincoln, Nebraska with my husband of 26 years and our 14-year-old son. We live minutes from our daughter and son-in-law who are expecting our first granddaughter this summer!

I love to be in the same room with my directees, but I also offer Zoom sessions if you don’t live in Lincoln, Nebraska, or if you feel safer not meeting in person because of the pandemic.

I recently heard someone say we live in an era of novelty or a world that is changing so fast we barely have time to adapt before things shift again.

I love that Spiritual Direction is an ancient practice with deep roots in the church and feel blessed to participate in this prayer-filled listening and discerning ministry. I especially love providing a safe, set-apart space of hospitality for the heart and soul of another person as we seek to discern the movements of the Holy Spirit and explore how God has been active and present in their life story.

I am grateful for a ministry that offers a path to ask honest questions, ponder mystery, and uncover truths about who we are and who God is. Companioning others on their journey to know, experience and respond to God’s intimate love and grace in all of life’s moments is a treasured gift.

I am a nurse with an M.Ed in School Nursing and background in pediatrics and public health. I practiced as certified school nurse for the last 17 years of my career, served on the board of Teen Mother Choices International and volunteered at a local pregnancy center. I am thrilled to now be practicing as a spiritual director!

I was certified as a Spiritual Director through Moody Bible Institute’s Advanced Spiritual Formation Certificate Program in 2019 and have been accompanying others in spiritual direction since then. In addition, I completed a 9-month Ignatian Spiritual Exercises program as well as the Emmaus 2-year Certificate in Formational Leadership Program through Leadership Transformations, Inc. I am currently accompanying others through the Ignatian Exercises as their spiritual director.

I love leading intimate soul-care retreats and have led personal as well as small and large group retreats for both college-age students and adults.

I received training in childhood trauma through Kane County ROE and Open Hearts Ministry, co-led a Spiritual 12 Step program through my church and am currently training with the OAKS Ministry Collaborative in Madison, WI.

I am married to my loving husband and together we have been blessed with 4 married adult children and 12 grandchildren who bring great joy to our lives. I enjoy gardening, learning about herbs, hiking, biking and offering hospitality in my home. My husband and I recently joined the Anglican Church, Christ Church of Madison, and are overflowing with joy to be part of a vibrant community where I serve as a prayer minister, small group leader and alter-guild member.

My own journey to Spiritual Direction came because I had questions and longings for deeper experiences of grace as I fumbled through believing in God, though I had been formed by shame & guilt both through negative church experiences and instances of interpersonal abuse. Through the companionship of spiritual directors I was able to bring fears, questions, doubts & longings to the surface of my awareness and to God in loving community. Spiritual Direction is where I experienced God's unconditional love.

Spiritual companionship through direction is a safe place to hold uncertainties without shame or judgement. It is an honor to listen to the stories of others with the Holy Spirit, noticing together Love's invitations, whatever the season. I love the gift of LIFE! And getting to companion with another as a spiritual director is pure privilege. While my formal training is in music, lay counseling, and spiritual direction, my most transformative training came through 32 years of experience on staff at Twin Cities Church in Grass Valley, CA. That's where I served in music ministry, pastoral ministries and teaching alongside my husband, who served as lead pastor. More training came through my companionship as a caregiver (focused on the elderly) and as a piano teacher (focused on the young). Both roles helped me appreciate how much grace we all need in every season of our lives.

After years invested in church ministry – so vital in introducing others to Christ’s love – I launched into the Soul Shepherding Institute's 2-year program of Soul Care, feeling worn and ragged at the start! That's when I began to recognize my need for deepening soul-transformation through contemplative work with Christ. The relief I found from anxiety and striving to “be enough” was so profound that it has become a great honor to companion with others who are also glimpsing the freedom of becoming all God intends them to be, unburdened by old hurts and hang-ups.

My journey includes being a mom to two amazing people, one biological and one adopted. Another formative season was the painful (victorious!) journey alongside my husband through esophageal cancer. Since retiring from church ministry, I am leading spiritual formation groups, meeting with individuals interested in going deeper with Christ, caring for the needs of elderly parents, and traveling. My favorite destination these days is to the home of my two grandkids!

Oh how often our hearts are sparked by a desire to go deeper in the spiritual life and to know the embrace of God who calls us…..Beloved! Spiritual direction allows you to slow down, to find that God might be pursuing you in ways that are sometimes unwanted, often unexpected, and are maybe even new to you as He unfolds both the “solidness” and the “mystery and beauty” of Himself. Through seeing His love and beauty, we can become aware of His activity in the whole of our life experience. We experience Jesus in the very middle of the yearnings, the delights, the sufferings and the doubts of our real, daily life.

I am so glad to be able to offer a place for listening to God together through spiritual direction, and to share as a spiritual friend with you in your ongoing spiritual journey. My hope is that our time together will allow you to notice more deeply where God is already present and working—although his presence might be unseen—and to see how he is stirring your heart to experience Him in yet deeper and deeper ways.

I trained as a spiritual director in the Selah (Leadership Development Institute) Certificate Program for Spiritual Direction. Previous to this, I served on the staff of a church discipleship training school and church college ministry staff for over fifteen years before living overseas as a missionary for a number of years. Most recently, I worked with local church prayer ministry. As other personal training and cultivating inner growth, I completed a two-year contemplative Soul Care course (from Soul Care Institute—Potter’s Inn, with additional credit from Fuller Seminary); I have done the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life; I have participated in many trainings in prayer and contemplative practices; and I participate in ongoing training courses and retreats led by Grafted Life, Selah, and other Biblical, Spirit-led organizations.

I’ve always been curious about people. Some of my earliest childhood memories are asking family members about what they were like when they were kids. I was fascinated by the ways people changed throughout a lifetime while also seeing parts of people’s personality and lives that carried forward from childhood — taking new shape and embodiment in every season of life — with them. It taught me that everyone has a story and that behind how we experience people in the present, there is a history that illuminates our capacity to love and be loved and how we exist in the world.

In my own journey with God, one of the ways I experienced God was as a safe place where my truest self and my most honest experiences were met with acceptance and embrace. It allowed for the ups and downs of my own story to no longer be a series of disparate events that happen throughout life but that they find their significance and definition within God’s larger story. My curiosity expanded from how people become who they are to where they see God in the totality of their experiences.

My exploration of where curiosity of story and God intersected led me to a completing a BA in psychology from UC San Diego followed by a Masters of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary. I then served as a pastor for 7 years prior to getting trained as a spiritual director with Nuos Formation.

At the heart of what spiritual direction looks like with me is curiosity and trust. I am interested in walking alongside people and helping them encounter their truest selves in relationship with God and what that unlocks in their lives. Our time together is marked with trust in the loving presence of a relational God who desires to meet us in our most authentic selves. What we do in spiritual direction is explore where God is in the midst of the totality of life — in the mundane tasks of the day-to-day, the big transitions of life, the questions we’ve wondered about but never let ourselves ask, the doubts about who God is, and the feelings that we have about life that can surprise us and catch us off guard. We walk through them and hold these parts of your life not as random or meaningless to God but parts of our lives that matter to God and through which He draws us into deeper relationship.

My mission is to be a trusted guide who creates loving, safe, and hospitable spaces that invite the Holy Spirit's work of wholeness, healing, and transformation for all who seek companionship on their faith journey. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, this ministry offers spiritual direction, spiritual retreats, teaching, and writing.

My Story
Some say life starts when we are born, but my life truly began when I was introduced to the healing, transformational power of an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Coming from experiences of childhood trauma, I was deeply wounded and unable to see or draw from the divine Spirit within me. Then, just when I had given up on ever finding true peace, God put the right people in my life who set me on a life-long journey that brought deep inner healing and transformation. I am eternally grateful for people who sat and listened to my story, praying with me as the Spirit worked. Now, from a healed, transformed heart and with the power of the Holy Spirit, it is my joy to create space where others can explore God’s movement in their spiritual journey of healing and transformation.
I have worked in Corporate America for nearly 30 years using my Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from the University of Dayton. But my true passion is helping people grow in God’s Word! So I returned to school to earn my Master of Divinity from Ashland Theological Seminary. I currently serve as an Associate Minister at Imani United Church of Christ, where I am honored to help people immerse themselves in God’s love through the Word by teaching Bible Study and writing Bible Study curricula.
I remain confident that the teaching ministry is vital and foundational in helping believers to grow in Christ. But I also believe that we reach our fullest potential as children of God when we journey with someone who can help us to see the move of God in our lives for a deeper, more intimate relationship with Christ. The ministry of spiritual direction and retreat planning extend my ability to walk with others on their spiritual journey, and my certificate in Spiritual Formation and the Art of Spiritual Direction from Healing Care Ministries has equipped me with the tools and training to do so.

I live in Northeast Ohio with my husband, and we have six adult children.

About Me

I am a Spiritual Director with an M.A. in Spiritual Formation & Soul Care from the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University as well as an M.A. in New Testament Studies. I have a very particular passion for those who feel stuck in their spiritual journey or who feel on the outskirts of what should be or what others are experiencing with God or the church. It is easy to find ourselves wondering "what is wrong with me," without any sense of where to turn or what to do in order to be "fixed" or return to "normal". In reality, everyone's journey with God is unique and I feel a deep sense of joy in helping others develop their own unique experience with God.

I have an interest in various personality theories (I am most familiar with Myers-Briggs and the Enneagram) as they relate to spirituality and enjoy exploring the inner work of the Holy Spirit as it relates to a person's individuality rather than what the expected "normal" is supposed to look like. I take particular delight in exploring where a person's emotional (heart) experience/theology contrasts with learned (head) theology and working through the tension that is found there.

I also have experience with inner healing and deliverance prayer ministry, which I generally do independent of direction, but these skills can be useful during direction in rare and particular instances. Those who are desiring exclusively the inner healing/deliverance ministry (either one session or several) are welcome to contact me for that purpose as well, without any expectation to continue in a Spiritual Direction relationship beyond that.

Regardless of where you are coming from or what your hopes and expectations may be, my hope for you is that you find a space where you feel heard, known, and loved as you are, without needing to change or grow in order to be accepted. May you sense the Holy Spirit's guidance in this present season.
