I have a heart for offering a quiet, safe space where others can reflect on their life and experiences with God in the midst of joys, challenges, and questions. I believe God is revealing his heart to us in spiritual friendship. Since 2005, I’ve enjoyed being a transformational discipleship leader for several non-profits, encouraging and strengthening the staff and body in the local church. It’s been in this “slow work of God” that I was led to pursue Spiritual Direction. I completed my training in Spiritual Direction at The School of Sustainable Faith. I earned a Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation and Direction from Richmont Graduate University in Atlanta, GA.

I offer individual Spiritual Direction through the Agape Center for Spiritual Formation in Roswell, GA both in-person and virtually. I have a heart for contemplative community and also serve as a speaker, group facilitator, and silent retreat Spiritual Director for Deepwater Women and Wellspring Group ministries. My heart is for you to be heard and held in whatever season you are currently walking in, as that is how Jesus is responding to you. Whether this is a time of heartache or a time of celebration, or a time of feeling lost, I know there is nuance to being understood and prayerfully perceiving what God may be up to in your life. I hope to be a place for you where that nuance is valued and held with care.

I believe transformation comes as we learn how kind God truly is and how loved we are by Christ. It comes as we learn how the Spirit is speaking in our lives in both the ordinary and extraordinary and we can walk in more freedom, love, and truth. It is while we shed the micro and macro lies that come up in everyday life circumstances that we get to see the beauty of the reality of our maker and the intimacy we have with Him and feel liberated to understand and be obedient to His will for our lives.

Background:
I gained my master’s from the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Biola University. Jesus miraculously healed so many areas of my heart during this time and I attribute the tool of Spiritual Direction to be a huge part of that journey; my hope is to allow for that same healing space for you. I've been in professional ministry for 9+ years as a Youth Pastor and Worship Leader. I'm particularly passionate about college students and moms, as well as teaching on prayer to all ages. Prior to this training, I lived in NYC attending The New School University as a dance and choreography major. I'm very passionate about the arts, music, visual art, poetry, theater etc., and have found artistic expression to be a profound tool to connect with God. My husband is a professional dancer
and we love getting to do artistic projects together. My family are all Christians and involved in the arts or ministry professionally. We are very close and daily sharpen each other to walk in righteousness. We are committed to powerful and loving communication and strive to be an example of this and to lead others into doing family well, especially healing through trauma and brokenness. Wherever in life you’ve experienced hurt, whether be it broken dreams, church hurt, or pain within your family, I promise God can heal the deepest wounds... I've seen it!

I am originally from South Africa, lived for a while in the UK, and have now been in the States since 1998. I live in Boston with my wife and 3 daughters and have worked with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship since 2002.

It has been a challenging and surprising journey to follow God as He has led me around the world, and over the last few years as He has led me more deeply into my own inner world. Becoming a spiritual director has been the single-most transformative decision I've made in the past 10 years. Receiving spiritual direction has been so life-giving to me. My friendship with Jesus has grown because I made a deicsion to regularly meet with a spiritual director. Because of this, I trained as a spiritual director with an organization called Soul Shepherding. I intentionally chose this certificate program for two reasons: 1) Because of Soul Shepherding's emphasis on bringing Christ-centered psychology into spiritual formation; and, 2) Because the founders of the program were personally mentored by Dallas and Jane Willard. Although I never knew Dallas Willard, his books and teachings have been very influential in my life and ministry. Participating in the Soul Shepherding Institutes showed me that God was not just giving me additional tools for helping people understand their friendship with Jesus, but I received a whole new paradigm for supporting others in their faith journey. It awakened within me a new way to minister to the growing needs within my church.

Before answering God's call to ordained ministry in The Wesleyan Church, I was a certified athletic trainer for a large sports medicine clinic. Currently I serve as the discipleship pastor in a mid-sized evangelical church where I oversee various ministries in spiritual formation, discipleship, small groups, church planting and multiplication, and staff development.

My wife, Jaclyn, and I have four children and six chickens. When I'm not cheering my kids on at their events I enjoy good coffee, conversation around fire pits, paddleboarding, hiking, and reading.

My walk with Jesus has has been a journey with many ups and downs. Twenty years ago, my life fell apart, and I was angry at God! Here is the amazing thing, it was at that point, my lowest point, that my faith begin to grow! It’s a long story, but I’ll just say, Jesus showed up in my pain. It was through Jesus that I could release my hurt, pain and bitterness to Him. It didn’t happen overnight, but through that process I’ve learned the gift of giving and receiving forgiveness, which actually opens your heart in ways I never dreamed possible. Through my desire to grow as a follower of Jesus, I discovered spiritual direction and felt called to learn more about this ministry.

I received my certification as a spiritual director through the School of Spiritual Direction with Sustainable Faith in 2021. The program was an intensive two year program which was life changing. I am a member of Spiritual Directors International (SDI) and ESDA. I follow their code of ethics in my practice, especially regard to confidentiality.

I have been a pastor for 31 years, mainly in the area of pastoral care. I also served in Brazil for 4 years, working with the poor and drug addicted. I have a Master of Divinity from Emmanuel Christian Seminary and a Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation and Leadership from Spring Arbor University. I have been trained in Spiritual Direction through both Sustainable Faith and the CenterQuest School of Spiritual Direction. My desire in retirement from full-time church ministry is to help people connect in a deeper way with God through spiritual direction. My work as a spiritual director is to focus my attention on your spiritual experience and points of self-discovery, and to explore with you God's movement in your life. I will not try to analyze or fix you. Spiritual direction is a conversation of the heart directed by the Spirit of God. It uses all our human faculties (intuition, emotion, imagination, sense and intellect) to discern God's presence for you as you understand it. It's my deep honor and commitment to walk with you on this journey through deep listening and personal support. This creates a safe environment to openly and prayerfully explore Divine promptings and openings as you draw closer to God through conversation, listening, and prayer.

What do we talk about? Whatever is on your mind and in your heart. For instance, where are you experiencing transitions in your life? What is happening in your life that may separate you from living into deeper meaning? How is God present or absent in various facets of your life? Are you experiencing a change or shift that leaves you wondering about your faith and about how you know God? How does your prayer picture nurture intimacy with God? How does your church experience support your faith journey? What are the desires of your heart telling you?

I love walking with others as they grow to engage God in the everyday. I have a special place in my heart for individuals who are willing to serve the church in any capacity. It's my joy to see God work in these individuals as they're being uniquely transformed to become like Jesus.

I've been on staff at Sandals Church since 2009. I serve as the church's Spiritual Formation Pastor. My primary responsibilities are to teach spiritual formation within our leadership development school, lead a team of people to create spiritual formation content, conversations and moments, and to offer regular spiritual direction to our campus pastors as well as other key church leaders. And of course, other duties as assigned, if you catch my drift.

In 1992 I married my high school sweetheart, Christina. We have three amazing adult children whom we enjoy spending time with. We are incredibly proud of them. My wife and I enjoy a balance of time between just the two of us and with friends whether we're at the beach, mountains, local wineries, or simply eating delicious food. I'm originally from San Diego, CA and with that carry the burden of being a Padres and Chargers fan (It's a burden because they just don't seem to win very much).

I received my training from the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot Seminary at Biola University. Prior to being in full-time ministry I spent a couple of decades in sales and sales management.

Hi! I’m Carey, a Spiritual Director and Mindful Self-Compassion Coach. I am passionate about helping you internalize the compassion and kindness of God by cultivating a mindset of self-compassion.
Seeing yourself as God sees you is directly correlated to seeing God accurately or, as A.W. Tozer says, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
Letting ourselves be loved by God may be some of the hardest yet most rewarding work we ever undertake. In fact, may I invite you to pause right now to take in the gaze of God who looks on you lovingly? Hear him saying: I have loved you with an everlasting love. I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3) If you like, take the deepest breath you have taken yet today, and as you do allow God’s smile to fill you.
There. That may be all you need for now, and if so, please go into your day in the love and kindness of God. But if you’d like to know more about me keep reading.

A Bit About Me:
I was raised by missionary parents in Burkina Faso right below the Sahara Desert. My dad built our little house near a small village on a one-lane red dirt road which ran on for two hours before it reached the nearest city. I loved my home with the whirr of the windmill pumping water into our barrels. I loved the mud-walled village nearby with its rhythmic sounds of nighttime drums and daytime grain-pounding.
These were the days of no rain, no crops, no food for those of the small village. Children with distended bellies from starvation came to our door and I handed them slices of bread, knowing it was never enough. Never enough. A village of heartbreak and there was never enough. I wanted to compassionately care, yet who could feed a village? I was only a child. My heart ached and needed its own compassionate care and would continue to as I was sent to boarding school for first grade.
Boarding school held its own pain and I doubt I would have survived those years without my childhood belief that Jesus was actually with me, like an invisible imaginary friend who cared for, who stayed with, and who liked me. In the absence of physical parents, I developed a strong attachment with my heavenly parent, the Trinity.
Having experienced a loving attachment with God in my years growing up and then suddenly losing a sense of God’s presence at age forty-five, sent me into a tailspin and a season of spiritual bleakness. The years of caring for others as teacher, church leader, and community volunteer were taking their toll. Depletion, burnout, and compassion fatigue sent me into depression and therapy.
A Tender Voice, the Spirit of Jesus, led me out of this season through an unexpected path – one of learning a mindset of compassion, but this time towards myself. Learning to practice self-compassion healed inner injuries and allowed me to hear God’s compassionate voice.
In sharing my story with others, I found that many Christians struggle to internalize God’s love. They believe God loves them, but don’t experience it. My desire to bridge this gap, led me to training through the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion (Dr. Kristin Neff and Dr. Chris Germer) as well as the Art of Spiritual Direction through Loyola Marymount and the Sisters of St Joseph, Orange.
I am dedicated to helping others internalize this love from which nothing can ever separate - not even an inner critic! I do this through self-compassion coaching, spiritual direction, group spiritual direction, poetry nights, and morning compassion retreats.

About Me

Offering, protecting, and nurturing attentive presence in which to listen to the presence and ways of our Triune God ~ what a graced ministry this is! It's a ministry and a grace that I've spent the past few decades enjoying, both in offering spiritual direction to individuals and in training others to do the same (through Leadership Transformations’ Selah Certificate Program in spiritual direction).

Over the years I've also offered retreat leadership and formation ministry to churches and parachurch ministries, including a co-curricular formation program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (where I received my theological training). I have a particular heart for clergy and other ministry leaders, and I serve as affiliated clergy in the Anglican Diocese in New England. I live in Hamilton Massachusetts with my dear husband Dave, and we are graced with three grown and delightfully married children. (MA in Theological Studies, Christian Ed concentration - GCTS; DMin with a Spiritual Formation focus - GCTS; Spiritual Direction training through CFDM Pacific Northwest.)

I serve as a Deaconess for over ten years at Faithful Central Bible Church, Inglewood, Ca. and at one time headed the FCBC Mentoring Program for three years. My passion for the needs of men and women in the Body of Christ led me to enroll at Biola.

In 2010, I received my MA in Spiritual Formation Emphasis, and completed the Soul Care requirements in 2013 from Biola’s Talbot School of Theology. I provide not only Spiritual Direction for individuals and group but also design retreats. This assignment to ministry leaves me with a passion to bring Spiritual Formation and provide Spiritual Direction to the Christian church universal.

Since starting my educational journey at Biola, I continue to assist men and women of all ages and ethnicities with their spiritual journey. My on-going educational pursuit has taught me even more so the value of listening and being sensitive when engaging the hearts of God’s Beloved in a one-on-one or group setting. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, pocket billiards and bowling.

About Me

What is the Lord doing in my life? How am I responding? How can I become more in tune to God’s ongoing, loving presence in my life? I find great joy in the slow and gentle work of journeying together with directees in the process of exploring these questions and living into these realities.

I come to this ministry as a former public-school teacher, mother of 4, pastor’s wife, ministry leader and foster parent. I was raised in Central California, but have called Long Beach, California home for my entire adult life. I studied Human Development and received my teaching credential from California State University, Long Beach. My training in Spiritual Direction came from Biola University where I completed my MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care at Talbot School of Theology. I currently serve there in an adjunct faculty role and as a staff spiritual director.

I would be so honored to come alongside and witness with you what God is up to in your life. I offer one-on-one spiritual direction in person or via zoom.
