About Me

I love companioning people in every stage of their journey with Jesus; helping them to find God in the events of their everyday lives. I am especially passionate about helping others to find God’s unforced rhythms of grace because of my own experience of burnout in full-time ministry. Also, with my background in nutrition and fitness, I love helping people in the care of their bodies as well as their souls. The biggest part of my direction is with missionaries in different life stages from initially going to the field to transitioning off the field. I also companion ministry leaders and spiritual directors.

I also speak and coach on the Enneagram with specializations in transformation via understanding the instinctual variants (subtypes) and Harmony Triads.

My initial direction training was with Sister Joan of the Queen of Angels Monastery in Mount Angel, Oregon back when there were no programs for protestants. I went on to do more training with Sustainable Faith.

I was also trained to take people through the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius by Mike Higgins from Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life, Portland (SEEL PDX).

About Me

As a spiritual director, my desire is to help you become more aware of how God is weaving in and through your life. I grew up in a Christian family, but it wasn’t until college that I began to understand Jesus’ invitation to personal relationship. I have worked in teaching and business, and have more than 30 years of practical ministry experience in the local church. I’ve lived various places in in the US and traveled to a number of countries.
These experiences have broadened my understanding of Jesus, of spiritual practices, and of the various ways God meets his people. Enneagram certification. I would be honored to come alongside you, to help you process what’s stirring within as you navigate your life crossroads and engage with God.
Presently I am the Executive Director of a non-profit ministry, The Unfolding Soul, offering spiritual direction, ministry coaching and speaking. I live with my pastor husband, Bruce and enjoy time with my grown children and grandchildren. I thoroughly enjoy outdoor activities, creative endeavors, reading, and always a good cup of tea. I am available for sessions in person at my farmhouse in Oregon, or online via Zoom or the phone.

My education spans varying cultures and contexts with an undergrad from the University of Oklahoma, a Masters from Southwestern Seminary in Texas, and a doctoral degree in spiritual formation from Northern Seminary in Illinois where I studied with Ruth Haley Barton. For fun, Mary Jo and I jump at any chance to go on a hike, take in ocean and mountain views, as well as hang out with our daughter Emily and her new husband Josh. Our visits to the Middle East, the UK, as well as New Zealand and Australia, highlight some of our favorite adventures. As a GenX-er, I’ve seen our world transformed in ways I never could have imagined as a boy. These changes have brought amazing gifts. For example, I entered the world of self employment in the late 1990s, right as the Internet was emerging. It has allowed me to provide for my family by raising two children from babies to adulthood, all while working from home. That’s something which was unheard of when my dad built his career in the same industry a generation prior.

But, of course, the changes have also brought challenges.

Never in the history of humanity have our souls been more unsettled. The same phones that allow us to video chat with loved ones on the other side of the word are robbing us of our peace, our mental health and our ability to hear God’s voice.

To be clear, I’m no luddite. I love technology and have spent nearly three decades working as a creative consultant in the marketing and advertising industry. The bulk of my clients have been large tech companies (Microsoft, Amazon, Google) and I’ve seen firsthand what a double-edged sword social media, technology and corporate culture are as they continually challenge the Imago Dei within each of us.

Therein lies the focus of my Spiritual Direction practice. I don’t believe in getting rid of our iPhones and iPads forever. But I do believe in getting rid of them for an hour. Or a day. Or, occasionally, for a week. I also don’t think we should quit our corporate jobs to retreat from society to live in a remote hermitage like the ancient Desert Fathers and Mothers. But I do think we can learn a tremendous amount from them.

Because when we’re finally able to quiet the word, we’re able to find peace, fill our souls and hear the voice of our heavenly father who loves us so very deeply.

I am a Spiritual Director with an M.A. in Spiritual Formation & Soul Care from the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University as well as an M.A. in New Testament Studies. I take particular delight in exploring where a person's emotional (heart) experience/theology contrasts with learned (head) theology and working through the tension that is found there.

I also have experience with inner healing and deliverance prayer ministry, which I generally do independent of direction, but these skills can be useful during direction in rare and particular instances. Those who are desiring exclusively the inner healing/deliverance ministry (either one session or several) are welcome to contact me for that purpose as well, without any expectation to continue in a Spiritual Direction relationship beyond that.

Helping others hear and respond to God’s voice is one of the greatest privileges any man could ever experience. Some define spiritual direction as “holy listening” and if that means “listening to the Holy Spirit” then I totally concur with that definition for truly the Holy Spirit is the ultimate spiritual director

I was first introduced to the idea of spiritual direction in 2001 when I enrolled in a nine-month version of Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises. This ultimate lead me to pursue a Certificate in Spiritual Direction at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. Prior to that experience my studies at Dallas Theological Seminary (ThM) and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (DMin) had provided me with a solid biblical and theological grid from which to launch into spiritual theology.

Since beginning pastoral ministry in two small church in rural South Dakota, I have pastored congregations in Khartoum, Sudan in East Africa; Mission, KS; Portland, Oregon and currently in Longview, Washington. From 1990 until 2008 I taught a variety of Spiritual Formation Courses at Multnomah Biblical Seminary where I am currently serving as an adjunct professor. For five years my wife and I also hosted a retreat center for pastors and their spouses.

My wife, Evelyn, and I have enjoyed over 50 years of marriage. We have been blessed with three children, all of whom are currently walking with the Lord and who are providing spiritual leadership to our nine grandchildren.

As a spiritual director I am privileged to work with any Christ-follower who desires to move forward in their spiritual journey, but I do feel a special affinity towards pastors and their special soul care needs.

I sensed God’s calling into the ministry of Spiritual Direction during my doctoral studies (Leadership and Spiritual Formation) at Portland Seminary. My calling as a spiritual director is to assist others in discerning God's movements in their lives and provide them space to construct their own framework. Often, it is within our life transitions where God works in our formation. While not uncommon, I have experienced many challenging transitions in my own life (personally, vocationally, theologically, spiritually) that taught me to patiently listen for God’s leading.

God is a true artist, and each story He is writing is full of creativity and beauty (even in the midst of the darkness we so often find). Having grown up spending my summers in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, I have always loved beauty and have a deep appreciation for the imagery God has woven throughout His creation. I recently completed my Spiritual Direction training through the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology and have one year left in my M.A. in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care. I also have a Certificate in Spiritual Formation and Leadership through The Leadership Institute - a spiritual formation and discipleship ministry based in Southern California. I am currently offering direction at Biola University as a staff director, as well as on an individual basis in the La Mirada area.

Having grown up in the church, my story has been one of rediscovering my faith apart from the legalism and performance based Christianity I grew up in. I love helping others discover true freedom in Christ as they rediscover their faith in light of God's grace. I have also been profoundly impacted through the time I have spent outdoors in God's creation and have a passion for helping others connect with God through an embodied faith. As Susanna Wesley once prayed, "Help me [help us], Lord, to remember that religion is not to be confined to the church, or closet, nor exercised only in prayer and meditation, but that everywhere I am in Thy presence... Hello! My name is Renee Shaeffer, and I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 18 years, and we have 2 boys (so far). I have been on a journey of faith for about 30 years now and
graduated from The Institution for Spiritual Formation at Talbot Theological Seminary with a Masters in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care in 2011 after resigning as a high school teacher and head volleyball coach. I am forever changed by the rhythms that God settled into my heart and mind during that time.

I seek to find God in all things and count it a privilege to walk alongside others in their faith journeys. I received training to be a Spiritual Director, which means I’ve had hours and days of practicing the art of listening and discernment. I don’t have magic powers – just skills to sit with others and listen to God with them and on their behalf. Before, during, and after every session I am completely and utterly dependent on the Holy Spirit to ultimately direct while we follow His lead and desire to respond in faithfulness and obedience.

In addition to my slight obsession with finding God in all things, I also love (like really love) the following:

travel, travel planning, 90’s Hip-Hop + R&B, Motown + Soul, B&Bs, Johnnyswim, friendships, going on walks, picnics, dancing, This Is Us, fresh squeezed orange juice, listening to vinyls on my record player, talking and learning about racial and social justice, adoption and foster care and all the messiness that leaning into broken and imperfect systems brings (God uses and is in it all), and Christmas.

I am a minister and spiritual director in the Pacific Northwest seeking to serve and support people in the way of Jesus.

I care deeply for people who are looking for spiritual support within and beyond the church in pursuit of growth, healing, and connection. I have walked with men and women; young and old; church leaders, church members, and those who don’t go to church.

I trained in spiritual direction at Portland Seminary, received a Master of Divinity from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, studied biblical text at Abilene Christian University, and currently serve as minister at the Federal Way Church of Christ.

I am also a certified ©iEnneagram Motions of the Soul practitioner, trained in utilizing the Enneagram as a tool for transformation, discernment, and spiritual growth. If you are interested, I would be glad to utilize the Enneagram in our sessions.

My desire as a spiritual director is to journey with you in reflecting deeply on your life, becoming more aware of God’s presence in the midst of it, and encouraging you to live from that place.

My work as a spiritual director is to focus my attention on your spiritual experience and points of self-discovery, and to explore with you God's movement in your life. I will not try to analyze or fix you. Spiritual direction is a conversation of the heart directed by the Spirit of God. It uses all our human faculties (intuition, emotion, imagination, sense and intellect) to discern God's presence for you as you understand it. It's my deep honor and commitment to walk with you on this journey through deep listening and personal support. This creates a safe environment to openly and prayerfully explore Divine promptings and openings as you draw closer to God through conversation, listening, and prayer.

What do we talk about? Whatever is on your mind and in your heart. For instance, where are you experiencing transitions in your life? What is happening in your life that may separate you from living into deeper meaning? How is God present or absent in various facets of your life? Are you experiencing a change or shift that leaves you wondering about your faith and about how you know God? How does your prayer picture nurture intimacy with God? How does your church experience support your faith journey? What are the desires of your heart telling you?

I received my training and certification as a spiritual director from Christian Formation and Direction Ministries (CFDM) in Phoenix, AZ in 2013. I have spent years utilizing my experience as a busy, Mother of 11 to support and encourage fellow Foster and Adoptive families in their search to find peace and balance by offering educational opportunities and spiritual retreats. My journey as an Adoptive Mom has provided rich opportunities to learn about complex family structures, trauma, mental health issues, neurodivergence, addiction, and caring for people with life-altering illnesses~ and all the complexities that come with learning how to live, thrive and love well as we share our heart with people who face these types of struggles.

My interest in spiritual formation exercises began in 2011 while participating in a formational journey with other women in ministry. Here I learned a language of Christian spirituality that was different from the theology and doctrines I grew up with. It was a language of heart – not just of mind and body.

My continued interest led me to Portland Seminary (formerly George Fox Evangelical Seminary) where I completed a three-year Master in Ministry with a Spiritual Direction Specialization. I am also an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God.

I love the illustration of our journey with God as a dance. Sometimes we dance with grace and beauty. Sometimes we miss a step here and there. Other times we have no idea if we’re even listening to the same beat as our Lead Dancer.

As a Spiritual Director, I desire to help you find your personal rhythm in your walk with Christ. It’s not about showing you a process or strategy. I won’t show you my steps. Instead, I will encourage you in your discoveries about yourself and about God.

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25
